Guatemala is a mountainous country with amazing volcanoes, stunning lakes, beaches and mayan villages. Most of the major cities are situated in the southern half of the country and our projects here work in between the capital Guatemala City, and the beautiful and timeless city of Antigua Guatemala where our volunteers stay. Antigua is nestled in a valley surrounded by the peaks of three towering volcanoes and is a magical city complete with restaurants, bars, cinemas and beautiful cobblestone streets and colonial buildings. You will find it hard to leave.
Street life is tough in Guatemala city where up to 3,000 children spend their days throughout the city, begging, stealing or sometimes just searching for a free shower. In the early evening, street kids start to congregate on the corners and abandoned buildings where they will spend the night. Some sell their bodies and all day and night they keep a grip on the balls of cloth that, wet with paint thinner or glue which is major problem here.
We are currently establishing links with a new organisation in Guatemala City and Antigua so that volunteers can bring arts and education workshops and much needed resources to these children. Details will be on the website soon.
