Many young girls in Bolivia who are deprived of their family environment for various reasons choose to live on the streets rather than being placed in institutions. They may have been abandoned or driven from their homes by poverty, violence and so forth and aged generally between 6-19, they develop – sometimes illegal – survival strategies and band together in groups or gangs (pandillas).
The lives they lead render them vulnerable to inhalant, drug and alcohol abuse and often drive them into prostitution and violent behaviour and many end up in a juvenile detention centre.
This is a state run detention centre and therefore lacks sufficient funds, staff and resources. The girls at this project would greatly welcome creative opportunities and activities as well as learning new skills such as computers, photography or clothes design....There is plenty of scope for working with these girls who are very keen for the company and support.
