Exhibition documenting the lives of the shoeshine boys of La Paz, Bolivia and their street paper Hormigon Armado, through photography, film, interviews and translations.
Phil Clarke-Hill photographs Lustrabotas, the hundreds of shoe shine boys who work and live on the streets of La Paz, Bolivia. The boys sell a street newspaper, wearing a mask while doing so to protect their dignity. These photographs operate both as social documentary and art photography. The boys help produce and sell a paper which also acts as a voice for them and a way to take control of their economic and social situation. The exhibition offers an insight into their lives and aims to the show the positive impact that the paper has of them.
The exhibition will be accompanied by various events addressing the role of street newspapers in empowering the homeless and unemployed, in an international context.
